Introduction to NLP for Business Analysts (a one-day course)

Course Content

1. Introduction

This session introduces the course and includes:

  • Course Overview
  • Introductions and personal objectives
  • Administrative arrangements

2. An overview of NLP

Participants will be introduced to Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), its’ history and the relevance of NLP to Business Analysts. Topics covered will be:

  • What is NLP
  • The founders of NLP
  • The NLP presuppositions
  • The NLP principles for success
  • Benefits of using NLP in Business Analysis

3. The NLP Communication Model

Effective communication forms an essential foundation for getting successful outcomes in most Business Analysis activities. During a typical working day, Business Analysts will be communicating with other people most of the time. NLP builds an understanding of how communication works with insights into how it can go well sometimes and then on other occasions it doesn’t. It provides a series of ways to communicate more effectively with others. The following areas will be introduced along with exercises so that participants start to build an awareness of their own preferred communication style:

  • The senses
  • Filters and thinking patterns
  • Creating a positive mind set

4. Building rapport and gaining trust

Rapport is an essential part of building good working relationships, in this session through discussion and exercises the participants will explore the principles of rapport, the components which create rapport and the indicators that rapport is in place. The areas covered will be:

  • Sensory acuity
  • Understanding body language
  • Different perspectives
  • Building flexibility in your communication

5. Getting results through the effective use of language

Language is one of the key filters in the NLP communication model and words are important when building rapport. Effective use of language can help in many business analysis activities such as interviews, presenting information, facilitation, influencing and negotiation. Participants will learn about the two language models of NLP and explore how to apply them in their work. Topics covered will be:

  • How we structure our language
  • Gathering information (Chunking up and down)
  • Listening skills

6. Action Planning

In this closing session, participants will be invited to complete action plans for next steps they will take to apply learning in the course to their work and personal situations.
